Create a safe and supportive environment: Participants with BPD often struggle with feelings of insecurity and instability, so it's important that we create a safe and supportive environment where they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and emotions.
Validate their experiences: People with BPD often feel invalidated or misunderstood by others, so it's important to validate their experiences and emotions. Active listening and empathetic responses can go a long way in building trust and rapport.
Help them identify triggers: Work with the person to identify triggers that may cause intense emotions or mood swings. Encourage them to keep a journal to track their emotions and identify patterns that may indicate triggers.
Develop coping strategies: Help the person develop coping strategies for managing intense emotions, such as deep breathing, mindfulness, or progressive muscle relaxation. Encourage them to practice self-care activities that help them feel more in control, such as exercise, meditation, or creative expression.
Encourage self-reflection: People with BPD may struggle with self-awareness, so encourage the person to reflect on their thoughts and behaviors. Help them identify patterns or behaviors that may be contributing to their emotional instability.
Provide resources: Provide resources such as books, podcasts, or support groups that can help the person learn more about BPD and connect with others who have similar experiences.
Support their treatment plan: People with BPD often benefit from a comprehensive treatment plan that includes therapy, medication, and other supports. Encourage the person to work closely with their healthcare providers to find the right treatment plan for them.
Remember, recovery from BPD is a process, and there may be setbacks along the way. As recovery coaches, our role is to provide support and encouragement as the participant navigate their journey toward recovery. We will encourage the participant to focus on progress rather than perfection, and celebrate their successes along the way.
